Sophie Leaver - Vocals

Having studied voice for 10 years, I have a great love for singing and performing all genres!

I specialise in Classical Voice at the University of Liverpool, and after graduating in July 2018, I am going on to study a Masters in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy.

My teaching experience includes working in New York in 2017 as a Musical Theatre vocal coach for children training to perform in Broadway musicals, but also for fun! I also teach university students and am the choral director of a university choir.

I take special interest in the technical aspects of the voice, and strive to teach the best ways to sing healthily and how to grow as a singer, whilst developing your own vocal style.

Performing is my passion, and I have experience singing in different bands, choirs and also as a character performer for charity events and parties. I have played the guitar since the age of 8 and love singing at local open mics around Liverpool.

There is nothing I love more than singing, and I hope to be able to share this passion with others here at Sound Affects!

Chloe Pettit - Piano & Keyboard

For as long as I can remember, music has played a huge part in my life. My earliest memory is of listening to ‘Kiss From A Rose’ by Seal and being completely absorbed by the music. As I got older, I began to play around with my dad’s keyboard, picking out tunes and teaching myself to play simple melodies. Not long after I started Flute lessons in school, which progressed into me taking one to one piano lessons where I began to fully develop my musical skills. I have been playing the piano for 13 years now, during which time I have taken music grades, explored different styles of piano playing, completed a Media, Music and Sound degree at university and enjoyed sharing my knowledge with others through teaching at Sound Affects.

James Morris - Guitar & Bass

I have been playing guitar for 5 years now at the age of 12 and I started my lessons here at Sound Affects soon after I started learning to play guitar. After a few years I started to join bands and since then I have played in numerous bands and gigged around the Liverpool and Manchester area.

From an early age Music has always been a big part of my life and I enjoy a wide variety of musical styles and genres. I am particularly influenced by blues music from artists such as BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan aswell as other bands from various other genres right through from 50s to the present day.  I feel that Music allows me to express myself In a way which I don't get from anything else.

Since I started playing guitar it has always been my aim to teach others and hopefully inspire them as I have been inspired and encouraged to continue by my tutors at sound affects.

Starting from October 2016 I will be studying music at BIMM university in Manchester as in the future I am hoping to become a session musician as well as continuing guitar tuition.

Alex Jarvis-Pearson - Drums

One of my earliest memories as a child is, at 6 years old, getting a guitar for Christmas and having absolutely no idea what to do with it but I remember just looking at it and knowing I wanted to get really good at it.

I studied guitar from the age of 6 until I was 12 and then decided I wanted guitar as a bit of fun. I have continued to play and learn guitar myself, to this day.

I started playing drums when I was 10 and it is something I have cherished every minute of. It’s the most satisfying feeling in the world to achieve something behind the drum kit, in my opinion. I absolutely love the continuous learning curve.

I have been in bands and performed on stage regularly, with both my guitar and drums, since the age of 11, and still do.

When I was 16, I left home and went to Guildford, Surrey, to attend the Academy of Contemporary Music, where I achieved my Drum Diploma. Along the way I was taught by the likes of Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Rodger Taylor of Queen.

All my tutors were either drummers from the west end or played in bands that were on TV like X Factor and the Voice, etc. One of my tutors was even an editor of “Rhythm Magazine.”

After leaving ACM at 18, I came to Preston to study my degree in Music Production at UCLan. As of 2016, I achieved a 2:1 with honours.

Since then I have worked briefly for BBC Radio 1 at Maida Vale Studios in London as a Drum Tech assistant/roadie for bands such as: Of Mice and Men, Bullet for my Valentine, PVRIS and Black Peaks.

I am extremely excited to be a part of the Sound Affects team and can’t wait to impart my knowledge and share my experiences with students, to watch them grow and succeed as creative and confident individuals.

Molly Goss-Turner - Vocal & Piano

I have been playing and performing music for as long as I can remember. With an opera singer for a mother, it was hard to avoid!

I started singing as soon was able, and began piano and the French Horn lessons when I was ten, achieving ABRSM Grade 8 in both singing and Horn, and Grade 5 in Piano. Throughout my schools years I was constantly performing as a soloist as well as with choirs and orchestras, this was when my passion for music really began. I am now just about to graduate with a BA in Music/Popular Music at the University of Liverpool and will start my MA in Music Industry Studies in September 2018. T

Although a classically trained singer, I have trained as a Jazz/Pop singer for the last four years and have found it is really what I love to do. Since I was 15 I have been singing and playing piano in bands, first was an acoustic girl band, then a five piece electronic band and now I perform in a duo. In the duo we perform R&B/Jazz/Soul covers but we also write our own original songs, inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Jorja Smith and Neo-soul groups such as Moonchild.

I really love to sing, play and perform and love would love to share my passions with others through teaching here at Sound Affects.

Paul Davies - Guitar (Including Classical)

I began playing the guitar at the age of nine when I was given a guitar for Christmas and ever since then I was hooked. I studied the classical guitar for twelve years, going through the grades and studying music theory to enhance my understanding. I completed a GCSE, A-Level and then went on to do a Degree in Music at Liverpool Hope University which I graduated from in July 2016. In my degree I studied advanced performance and music theory, composition, songwriting and music history. I have performed the classical guitar in a wide range of settings such as weddings, town fairs, charity concerts and gigs.

Alongside my studies on the classical guitar my interest in playing the electric guitar grew. I used my knowledge of the classical guitar and began playing a wider range of styles such as Metal, Progressive Rock, Jazz, Blues and Soul music. As a result this expanded my use of instrument into mainly extended range guitars, rarely finding myself playing guitars with just six strings. I performed in a rock band for four years playing venues such as the Cavern Club and Liverpool’s O2 Academy on both the second and main stage.

Using the broad range of skills and experience I have gained I now teach Music Theory, Classical and Electric Guitar here at Sound Affects.

Ed Cuss - Drums

I’ve been playing the drums for 15 years, I gained a 2:1 Hons in Popular Music at UoL with a heavy emphasis on performance. I’ve played countless gigs and currently teach drums in schools to students ranging from 4-17 years old. I have an 100% pass rate in Rockschool examinations and also can teach my students anything using my extensive syllabus.

When teaching I try to help nurture my student’s development of their own style through creative exercises and offer them new perspectives on what they already know. I strive to deliver highly conceptual ideas in a simplistic way to allow my students the building blocks to take certain ideas as far as they want to themselves.

I try to keep the tradition of drums as a communicative instrument alive in my teaching by giving my students the vocabulary to convey and express themselves behind the drums.

The use of my “Choose your own adventure” style syllabus means that my students are in the driver’s seat of their education allowing them to explore the concepts and styles that they’re interested in whilst gaining a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of drumming.

My main influences are Steve Gadd (Paul Simon, Steely Dan), Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting) and JP Bouvet (Childish Japes, Periphery) for their individual style and sound. Rather than emulate them I try to forge my own sound through creative teaching and learning.

Peter Donnelly - Guitar

I have been teaching guitar for over 5 years and playing in local bands for 13 years, supporting acts such as Graham Bonnet (Rainbow), Electric Six, Space, and Skin. I specialise in Rock and Blues but can also teach Pop, Funk and Acoustic styles.

For those wanting to do music grades I teach Rockschool grades 1-8 with 100% pass rate, but can also teach your favourite songs just for fun. As well as acoustic and electric guitar, I also teach some bass guitar and ukulele.

Andy Hinton - Guitar

I have been playing guitar since the age of 9, and from the age of 14 I have pursued a career in music. From school I went on to do a Music Diploma at college and then onto university. I graduated from University of Liverpool in 2017 where I studied Popular Music. I have experience teaching guitar lessons privately and in my old high school, before joining the team here at Sound Affects.

I have been performing since I was a teenager in bands, and I am currently a member of Vulture Cult writing and performing our own music around the country. I am competent in a wide range of styles from Blues and Jazz to Rock and Metal, and my lessons focus on practical performance skills to help people get out and play music! I can teach Rockschool grades or simply your favourite songs, it is entirely up to you!

Marek Smagala - Piano

I first began playing piano when I was 8 years old, and it’s been a huge part of my life ever since!
13 years later, and I’ve been able to achieve ABRSM Piano Grades 1-8 all at distinction. I have continued my passion for music all the way from London to Liverpool, where I am about to graduate with a Music BA at the University of Liverpool.

Through learning and experimenting with the piano, I have found my true ambition in life is composition, a valuable skill that the piano can unlock for any musician. Whether it’s writing the next pop hit or a symphony, it can be amazing tool as well as an instrument which really encourages musicality and artistic expression.
I’ve performed in multiple settings such as school concerts, gigs in bars, and musicals over the years and this versatility is something that comes naturally to anyone willing to learn the piano.

The piano has helped me develop and grow as a musician in countless ways and it’s with great joy that I have the opportunity to pass along my knowledge and passion to others here at Sound Affects!

Tim Cunningham - Guitar

I started to strum the guitar at the age of 15, but it wasn’t until a year later that I really started to learn how to play. I was fortunate enough to come across an advert in a corner shop for guitar lessons. My tutor Nick was, and still is, the biggest inspiration to my playing. I still find myself referencing techniques, ideas, and philosophies that he taught me even to this day, 23 years later.

Whatever style you wish to learn, I will assist you in your journey to become the guitar player YOU want to be. I use a variety of teaching methods and will happily adapt my approach to meet each individual student's needs. As well as teaching guitar and bass, I can tutor students in music theory, and can assist in GCSE and A level coursework. As an actively-gigging musician I can aid my students in their performance skills, building confidence and assurance on stage with the help of the 20 years of experience I have of playing in live situations.

I have studied at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, the City of Liverpool College and John Moores University, and I hold an HND in Jazz and Contemporary Music and a First-Class degree in Popular Music.
